Thread Review for Johnathon's last show. (newest post first)

If they're smart, they'll use Jon.  After all, if they want to sell it, they'll use Martine, and they'll have to bring back Nick because Sinclair will come off *worse* on screen than on stage, and so they'll have to ask Jon back because he's worked with these people before.

Not to mention that everyone has seen the Rex Harrison/Audrey Hepburn film, and while I love Alex, he's closer to Harrison.  If the three actors were on a continuum, it would go from Harrison to Jennings to Pryce.

And I think Jon is a better sell for a musical, but what do I know?  I get excited over names like Tam Mutu and David Bardsley *g*.

I agree with everything you say, Lucy. I always thought Rex Harrison was the embodiment of Higgins but that was completely blown away by Jonathan's performance. He was Higgins as he was meant to be played. After seeing the show for the first time I watched the film again and Rex Harrison's Higgins seems quite bland in comparison. Whether Alex can improve on perfection remains to be seen.

And, yes, wouldn't it be luvverly if they filmed it with Jonathan so that wonderful performance could be preserved for posterity

My issue is, that I have loved Henry Higgins from the moment I picked up Pygmalion and had a clear picture of what he was like in my mind. Rex Harrisson's Higgins was not a patch on the one I loved and I grew an instant dislike towards him for it. Jon's Higgins is my Higgins. It was perfect and that's why I don't intend on seeing Alex Jennings. I would hate every second of it, especially as you say it is so different to Jon's and the rest of the cast are bad. Unless Jon returns (fat chance) I'm officially a My Fair Lady free zone from now on!
(Please God let them film it with Jon!!!!)

I wish I *had* seen him in some other things -- he's a terrific actor.  His singing needs work, but it's his first musical, I was there his first night, I'm giving him lots of leeway on that one.  The Higgins he creates is brilliant and not at all like Jon's.

I especially like the scene right before "Just You Wait".  Alex goes into the corner and gets one of those huge fraternity paddles (it had tassles -- it wasn't a cricket bat, though the shape was dang similar) and has that resting on his shoulder while shouting at Eliza to "Say 'a'!"

My problem with writing a review at the moment, however, is trying to phrase my comments about the other new cast members nicely -- fans of Mark Umbers are going to be cringing, and fans of Nicholas le Prevost are going to have similar reactions.  I'm trying not to blast people, but in all seriousness, the only new main cast member I like is Alex.  Dilys Laye plays the character very well, and I like her acting, but her voice *shudder*.  It sounds as if someone took sandpaper to a smoker's cough.  I don't know how she can talk that way!  Still, I like her acting, which is far more than I can say for Peter Prentice.  Full comments will come eventually.

I've seen Alex Jennings in quite a few things, and I can testify that he is an A-Grade, top-drawer actor!  You're all gonna love him!

All the best,
Chris

My thoughts exactly! Kathryn, my deepest sympathies for suffering withdrawl symptoms. Rest assured you're not alone!

I'm going back to London for an audition on Friday so I might pop in and see if I can get a seat. As much I can't wait to see Alex Jennings in the role, I hope I don't end up having my JP memories wiped from my mind.

Has anyone here seen Alex Jennings in anything else? Anyone catch The Relapse?

Wait a few days and go see Alex

I went to the matinee. Jonathan was as wonderful as ever: the best I've seen him. There was a wonderful moment in "why can't a woman?" where, in the pause at the end of the song after "why can't a woman!"a little chorus of voices piped up "...be like you!" He stopped , grinned and said with perfect poise "thank you very much. Precisely. ...be like me!" It was hilarious. The show was sparkling. Alex Jay was Eliza. They really seemed to be enjoying their last show together. I'm really sorry I'll never see JP again in the role. Any suggestions for getting over withdrawal symptoms??

Is anyone going this afternoon or tonight?

I wish I was able to go, but since I can't I'd really love to know how it goes. If anyone goes, do you fancy telling me about it?
Thanks.
