Andrew Grant Posted on 11:40 am on Mar. 29, 2002
Hope you have a good time! GOOD LUCK to the people of London because tomorrow there will be two Foster. I have always thought one was bad enough!! (James do you have NE credit, cos u ain't replyin to me messages!!)

James Foster Posted on 7:44 am on Mar. 29, 2002
I will be able to give my overall impression of Joanna Riding tomorrow as i am going to see her at the matinee performance. I admit that i shouldn't be so cynical and should wait( which i will do from now on) until i have seen a full performance of a person. Apologies to Joanna Riding- i am sure you'll be bloomin' loverly.

This place is getting stupid. Whenever makes a comment it is always thrown right back at-ya!! James Foster was giving his thoughts, it does not need to be replied to because that is what he thinls!!

First of all, it is very simple to re-login on this board.

Second, what does "cockney" have to do with "The Rain in Spain"?  That's the first song where it *doesn't* matter.

Third, if Eliza did not have a beautiful voice under that ghastly accent, she never could have been viewed as princess -- this is direct from Shaw, so take it up with Georgie-boy if you have a problem with his writing.

Fourth, I'd apply the same measure to Alex Jay as well.  "Rain in Spain" doesn't match up because it isn't supposed to.  Judge the plausibility of "cockney" by "Loverly", not by "Rain in Spain".

From James Foster 'cos he is using my computer!!

Her voice didn't seem right for cockney!!

Azile Posted on 12:06 am on Mar. 14, 2002
What was "dreadful" about her "Rain in Spain" James?

Andrew Grant Posted on 2:14 pm on Mar. 12, 2002
You all get so offended by the most pathetic of things!! Calm yourselves and learn to take unthoughtful criticism!!

LOL

I'm not a Martine fan I confess it but I think that to say that she can't sing very well is clearly a comment from the musically unable. She can sing. Buy the soundtrack! She reaches unbelievable soprano heights perfectly however her performance as a whole was not outstanding and did not leave me feeling I had witnessed anything wonderful. Joanna Riding is superb though and is clearly more cut out for such a part due to her prior training and experience.
Please keep such ignorant, thoughtless remarks where they belong...within the 'Brain of Grant'

I AGREE MARTINE Mc (i look like someone has hit me with a frying pan) utcheon is terrible! She hasn't got the right kind of voice to play Eliza. Don't get me wrong, she can sing...................just not very well!!

Andrew Grant Posted on 10:54 am on Mar. 11, 2002
I think it very wrong for you to ask for our thoughts on Joanna Ridings and then when they are given you poo-poo them. I also saw the 'clip' which you mention and semi-agree with you. Although I think Joanna needs time to get into playing her role of Eliza, when she does she will easily out do Martine, because I expect she will actually go to work!

I saw My Fair Lady on the 12th December 2001. I was treated to the most fantastic show. Joanna Riding was Perfect for the part. I could not fault her. Her cockney accent was wonderful. She is truly a star of the stage. When I saw her in the white dress. Wow. She was stunning.

I have not seen Joanna Riding in My Fair Lady.  However,  I have seen her in Martin Guerre and think that she was absolutely amazing.  I am absolutely sure that My fair lady will go from strength from strength now that they have got rid of a star name 'Martine McCutcheon' and replaced her with some-one who actually has 'star quality'.............  Good luck Jo!

chrisball Posted on 4:55 pm on Feb. 26, 2002
You can see her in full performance now, playing against Mr Pryce . . .

JamesFoster Posted on 10:59 am on Feb. 26, 2002
Sorry i didn't mean to offend ne1! I am sure that Joanna is good and i look forward to seeing her in full performance when Alex Jennigs arrives.

I find it interesting that you ask for our opinions, then seem to disregard them completely.  "Thank you, but you're wrong."  It was one thing when you asked for opinions of Jo Riding, having seen a clip you thought less than good.  Your thank you was quite another.

Is your opinion worth more than ours, or did we disappoint your attempt at Jo Riding bashing?  In either case, perhaps you should start a topic specifically for praise of Martine McCutcheon where some of us would never consider responding.

chrisball Posted on 7:19 am on Feb. 22, 2002
Thanks, James Foster, for your view that Martine is the best.  It would seem that others don't share your view.  If Martine is truly to be considered "the best", I look forward to seeing her consistently take on the toughest roles in musical theatre - not just in London, but on UK tours.  Oh, and for a full week of performances.  Then you can really be considered "the best".

Strangely enough, Joanna Riding has taken tough roles in musical theatre, on tour and in the west-end, and has consistently come up with the goods.  Joanna Riding is an actress of the highest order, whereas Martine McCutcheon is just another actress.  Still, I'm sure she'll make a good bridesmaid at Liza Minnelli's wedding . . .

Sarah W Posted on 5:21 am on Feb. 22, 2002
I assume the clip you are referring to is from the 'week in the westend'. I don't think it is fair to judge any performers complete performance from a clip. I never saw Martine and have yet to see Joanna but I wouldn't want to judge Martine's whole performance from the TV clips I have which includes the rehearsal for Rain in Spain.

JamesFoster Posted on 6:54 am on Feb. 21, 2002
Thank you for your views but Martine is the best!!!
