Thread Review for Cameron Mackintosh (newest post first)

I love seeing people who have taste *g*.

I love The Fix, but I heard that after the Signature Theatre production in the DC area, Cam Mack asked Dempsey and Rowe if they would consider re-writing it, and frankly, since they already replaced First Came Mercy, I don't want any more Cam Mack involvement in that show.  How could First Came Mercy be replaced by the vaudevillish Mercy Me?  It's not as deep of a song anymore -- the orchestrations were brightened up and the lyrics lightened.  I was not happy at all.  Admittedly, it fit with the over the top feel of the new production, but I missed the Donmar version to tears!

I'm afraid Cameron has given up on Martin Guerre -- what I want is for them to release the rights so that smaller theatre companies can do what he never quite succeed in doing:  bringing the production to a small stage and intimate setting.  I can think of many regional companies in the US (I just don't know the regional theatre scene in the UK, but I drool at the thought of Martin going into the Bridewell) who would do a brilliant job with it.  I never cried over Miss Saigon until I saw a regional production that was staged in the round, where the worst seats were ten rows from the stage and the front row was warned at the outset not to touch the stage because you already were with your knees anyway.  When I think of Martin in that theatre, I just get chills.

So as much as I love those shows, perhaps it's time to take them regionally.  Cam Mack is a genius with big productions, but I'm not so sure he can handle the other end of the spectrum.

I just want my Martin -- that's all I ask.  And I'll get it if he would just release the rights.  Which may happen:  it's a different producer in Madrid, and Cameron has mentioned that he would hand it over to the right person in the US.

Third! And I'd also love to see The Fix make a reapearance after doing so poorly when it came to the west-end. It's a fantastic show!

I'll second that!  Martin Guerre is a fantastic piece of theatre!

Just wanted to say congratulations to CM on the first anniversarry of MFL.  Over the years CM has presented world class productions in London and whether or  not they have succeeded, have all been brilliant.........  Lets hope a few years down the line the time will be right to re-produce Martin Guerre which (in my opinion) never achieved the success it deserved
