Went to see the perfomance on Saturday night (27th April). Although utterly immersed in the experience and loved every minute can anybody confirm the following:- Is the music live or on tape? The music kicked in immediately and ended without any instruments reverberating and continuing in note (i.e. drums etc.) I thought at the interval it must have been on tape and at the end could not see any musicians (from the upper circle), however the cast gave 'somebody' a round of applause. I know if you are going to see a musical you expect to hear live music and if this was live they are the tightest bunch of performers ever. Just a thought...

Of course it was live -- you probably noticed that the stage was quite a distance from the first row of seats, and that's because that's where the orchestra pit is. Notre Dame de Paris over here and Contact in New York are glaring exceptions because everything else, from My Fair Lady and South Pacific (where the orchestra was behind a screen at the rear of the stage) to We Will Rock You and Mamma Mia, has a live orchestra. The musicians have a union, just as the actors do, and I know in New York, they kicked up a huge, and justifiable, fuss over Contact. I say "of course" as if it were a stupid question, but then I remember NDP and realise it wasn't that stupid. If you were in the upper circle, you had a far better blend than if you were, say, in the front row. I like sitting front row of the stalls, however, and hearing the various individual instruments. The horns are really quite nice to listen to.
