Professor Henry Higgins

Alex trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

His extensive theatre credits include: Weasel in Toad of Toad Hall (Leeds Playhouse), the title role in Macbeth (UK tour), Simon Bliss in Hay Fever (Theatre Royal, York), Gloumov in Too Clever by Half (Old Vic - Olivier Award for Comedy Performance of the Year, Plays and Players Award for Actor of the Year, Drama Magazine Award for Best Actor of 1988). RSC credits include: The Taming of the Shrew, Measure for Measure, the lead in Richard II, Peer Gynt in Peer Gynt (Stratford and The Young Vic - Olivier Award for Best Actor), A Midsummer Nights Dream (nominated for Outstanding Debut by an Actor in a Play by the Outer Critics' Circle, nominated for a Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lead Actor), the title role in Hamlet for which he won the Helen Hayes Award. He was a member of Royal National Theatre playing roles including Dr Paul in Ghetto, the lead in Speer, and Leontes in A Winter's Tale. He has also played with the Peter Hall Company in The Liar and The Wild Duck.

Television credits include: Smiley's People, Shelley, Inspector Morse, Hard Times, Bad Blood, Too Much Sun and the title roles in Alfonso Bonzo and Ashenden the Spy. Film credits include: War Requiem, A Midsummer Nights Dream, The Wings of a Dove, Solo Shuttle, C.S.S. Hunley and The Four Feathers. Alex worked with the BBC Repertory Company and has done many broadcasts including Mozart in Amadeus for the BBC World Service. Extensive BBC recordings include: The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies, Alexander the Great, Three Men in a Boat and reading Coleridge's poems in Nations Favourite Lakeland Poems. Numerous audio books include: Agatha Christie's The Secret Adversary, The Dark is Rising, Crime and Punishment, Nicholas Nickleby, Dombey and Son, Shakespeare Sonnets, Grassmere Journals and The Fog.
