Theatre credits include several seasons for the Royal National theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company where he played Captain Hook/Mr Darling in Peter Pan, Sir Toby Belch in Twelfth Night, Cardinal Wolsey in Henry VIII, Trevor in Bedroom Farce, Peer Gynt in Peer Gynt, Chichester in The Romans in Britain, Cassio in Othello, Hjalmar Ekdal in The Wild Duck, The Cardinal Inquisitor in The Life of Galileo, Parolles in All's Well That Ends Well (for which he received a SWET nomination and a Tony nomination for the Broadway production), Jack Idle in Poppy (the only other musical he has appeared in and for which he received a SWET nomination), Gayev in The Cherry Orchard, Peter Stockman in An Enemy of the People, Jack McCracken in A Small Family Business, as well as notable appearances in Mother Courage, A Penny for a Song, The Shaugraun, Bartholomew Fair, Piano, The Threepenny Opera, Love for Loves, Dalliance, Sisterly Feelings and Torvald in A Doll's House for which he received the SWET Award for Best Actor.

In the West End he has appeared in Reflected Glory, The Hard Shoulder, It's a Two Foot Six Inches Above the Ground World, Paris Match, West of Suez, Bedroom Farce, Dirty Linen and New Found Land; and numerous plays in repertory at the Mermaid Theatre, Colchester, Birmingham, Windsor, and the Bristol Old Vic, as well as the Old Vic Company where he began his career.

Television credits include: Harry Enfield and Chums, The Student Prince, Middlemarch, Brideshead Revisited, Three Men in a Boat, Sharpe, The Queen's Nose, The Lenny Henry Show, Love on a Branchline, The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, The Growing Pains of Adrian Mole, Tales from Hollywood, Silent Witness, Leprechauns, Mersey Beat and, most recently, Ready When You Are Mr McGill.
