MY FAIR LADY ANNOUNCES ITS LAST FOUR MONTHS AT THE THEATRE ROYAL DRURY LANE
BEFORE CLOSING ON SATURDAY 30 AUGUST PRIOR TO GOING TO BROADWAY
Cameron Mackintosh announced that his hugely successful production of MY FAIR LADY will finish its London run at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on Saturday 30 August, after two and a half years.
In addition to recouping its entire capitalization in a record-breaking 18 weeks, the production has made profits in excess of 2 million. Although the Theatre Royal Drury Lane is one of the largest West End houses, this production of MY FAIR LADY recouped faster than any other show of its size in recent history.
The show opened in Summer 2001 with advance bookings of 10 million, an all-time record for the West End. Given that it was a revival, the run of two and a half years exceeded all expectations. Plans are now proceeding to take the production to Broadway and Australia.
Cameron Mackintosh says, "MY FAIR LADY has always been one of my favourite musicals, so I have been thrilled with the huge success of this production which has run even longer than the first time I did the show in 1978. The current cast has received the best notices yet and consequently I have decided to end the London run on a high, rather than try and recast the show yet again when several contracts run out in the Autumn. I look forward to producing this marvellous musical once more, in about twenty years!"
When told of the decision to close, David Grossberg representing Lerner and Loewe said, "The run of this magnificent revival of MY FAIR LADY has far exceeded our expectations".
MY FAIR LADY currently stars Anthony Andrews, Laura Michelle Kelly and Russ Abbot as 'Professor Henry Higgins', 'Eliza Doolittle and 'Alfred P Doolittle'. Stephen Moore plays 'Colonel Hugh Pickering', Hannah Gordon 'Mrs Higgins', Michael Xavier 'Freddy Eynsford-Hill' and Patsy Rowlands 'Mrs Pearce'.
Re-reviewed last month by all the major National Press, the production and new cast have been celebrated:
"Musical Theatre at the very summit of its achievement it undoubtedly remains the top recommendation in town" Daily Telegraph
"This stylish, spectacular production is a class act. Irresistibly entertaining" Mail on Sunday
"This fabulous Lerner & Loewe musical still works its enchanting magic" Evening Standard
"This MY FAIR LADY remains a lovely night out and trumps the Oscar-laden 1964 screen version" The Times
MY FAIR LADY won three Laurence Olivier Awards last year, including 'Outstanding Musical Production', and won two Laurence Olivier Awards this year for Alex Jennings and Joanna Riding as 'Best Actor' and 'Best Actress in a Musical', the first time in Olivier Award History that two actresses have won the same award for playing the same role in consecutive years.
MY FAIR LADY has book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe and is adapted from Bernard Shaw's play "Pygmalion" and Gabriel Pascal's motion picture.
MY FAIR LADY is directed by Trevor Nunn and has choreography and musical staging by Matthew Bourne, with sets and costumes designed by Anthony Ward and lighting by David Hersey. The musical supervisor is David White and the orchestrations are by William David Brohn, with the dance-music arranged by Chris Walker. Stephen Brooker is musical director and the sound is by Paul Groothuis.
MY FAIR LADY is produced by Cameron Mackintosh, in association with the Royal National Theatre.
MY FAIR LADY is now booking until the 30th August 2003.
