I was at the show on Wednesday for the matinee and it was being filmed for the achives. Knowing this however, the cast seemed determined to make each other forget their lines or burst out laughing! For example, Eliza sounded like a "billious PANDA"? It was good fum to watch though! Sam

Sji, I was there on the Wednesday matinee too and I found it so funny. I have to say though, that Johnathon was by far the more guilty party. Did you see how he let Alex babble on for ages before he cut her off for "Why can't the English?" She almost corpsed about five times during that scene, it was hilarious. Absolutely loved every second though, as always. How I wish I was going to see Johnathon's last show on Saturday!

Hang on. I was there on the Wednesday night and was told that the filming was being done then. Was the matinee a practice run or are both versions being submitted to the archives?

What kind of equipment was being used? I mean, far be it from me to suggest that they were filming for future DVD or video presentation . . . Though I doubt if they were, otherwise the actors would have been on their best behaviour. Also, I might as well raise the old bugbear again. If shows are filmed for "archive", then why the hell don't the producers go the whole hog and market these recordings to those who wish to have them? All the best, Chris

I read in the Stage a couple of months back that talks were being held about the possibilty of putting this MFL on video. However I've heard nothing since. Do you think this will happen in the future? I'm anything but well-versed in jargon relating to filming equipment, so I couldn't tell you exactly what they used, even though I was sitting a few seats away from the camera. But I don't think they were the sort of cameras that would be used to record a video or DVD presentation. If they ever did film it, I'd hope they'd do it the way Oklahoma was filmed. Any thoughts?

I firmly believe that it should be filmed so that the people who can't see the show on stage will still be able to see it on video?

I was there for the Wednesday performance and it was being filmed by older looking cameras. Hope it will be released on DVD - would be a great addition to the DVD collection.

If they did it for DVD/video, they'd have to pull back in Martine, I'm sure -- regardless of your feelings about her, to film the show without the actress who won the Olivier would just be wrong. I doubt they would do it, however -- those films are not easy or cheap to make, as opposed to those done for archival purposes (which are full-stage shots with no closeups), and it would have been cheaper and simpler to have done it while Martine was still under contract. I just don't think we'll get a video with Jo because she isn't as marketable as Martine was. It's sad, and I'd pay good money for a copy with Jo, but I just don't see it happening.

So a video/DVD presentation doesn't look likely then? Grr! I know it's not the same on video but I'd still give my right arm to have a copy of the show on video. If Jo were on it I'd be even happier. Still, we can only hope...

Actually, I believe a film version is VERY likely. The BBC are currently in the process of trying to establish some kind of rights negotiation to film and broadcast major west-end shows (similar to their Royal Opera House agreement). Shows would then be broadcast on BBC4 and primetime BBC1. The only problem is with the complexity of rights negotiation, which would be easily resolved if Equity could cut a little slack with the red tape and negotiate a similar royalties cut as for audio recordings. In fact, television rights should (in principle) be easier to manage than audio rights. It is a proven fact that tv recordings actually enhance ticket sales, since people are encouraged to go and see it "live". Also, it brings in new fans who might be priced out of the west-end/broadway, who will (perhaps) save a little money each month towards the big night out where once before they may have seen 42 tickets as being a little excessive. The time is near - theartv will be in the UK within the next couple of years. All the best, Chris
