Has anyone seen Joanna Riding play Eliza? I saw a clip with her singing "The Rain in Spain" and it was dreadful!! Does anyone disagree? I have seen four Elizas and by far the greatest is Martine McCutcheon!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw her in her first week - 14 December, to be exact, and I thought she was brilliant. She seemed to get on well with Jonathan Pryce, her voice was in top form, and her acting was exquisite. I will admit that I have not seen any of the other Elizas in this production. But I thought Jo's "I Could Have Danced All Night" was fantastic -- I'd never heard her voice so clear, and I especially loved how she would occasionally on a word slip into the previous accent. It made ever so much sense. Plus she's adorable. Jo may not be to everyone's taste, but she is far from dreadful. Have you seen her through an entire performance? I've often found that "The Rain in Spain" is not the best showcase for an actress -- it has to start out awkward and stiff. But the moment when she gets it is just beautiful. She works beautifully with Mark Umbers, and her "Show Me" is both beautifully sung and amusingly acted. I'm refraining from repeating what others have said about Martine McCutcheon, but I will say I put off booking until Jo joined the cast. Monday nights and Wednesday matinees were both doable but not the best times for me to go, therefore I've not had a chance to see Alexandra Jay -- the fill-in was at a difficult time for me to get to the theatre.

I have seen Jo quite a few time's, in MFL and I have to say she goes from strength to strength, she is very well suited to the part, she is very funny in the first act, and very moving in the second, and she sings it beautifully. I have seen both Martine and Alex but I have to say Jo is by far the best. There is great chemistry between Jo and the other leads in the show, who are all great.

I assume the clip you are referring to is from the 'week in the westend'. I don't think it is fair to judge any performers complete performance from a clip. I never saw Martine and have yet to see Joanna but I wouldn't want to judge Martine's whole performance from the TV clips I have which includes the rehearsal for Rain in Spain.

Thanks, James Foster, for your view that Martine is the best. It would seem that others don't share your view. If Martine is truly to be considered "the best", I look forward to seeing her consistently take on the toughest roles in musical theatre - not just in London, but on UK tours. Oh, and for a full week of performances. Then you can really be considered "the best". Strangely enough, Joanna Riding has taken tough roles in musical theatre, on tour and in the west-end, and has consistently come up with the goods. Joanna Riding is an actress of the highest order, whereas Martine McCutcheon is just another actress. Still, I'm sure she'll make a good bridesmaid at Liza Minnelli's wedding . . .

I find it interesting that you ask for our opinions, then seem to disregard them completely. "Thank you, but you're wrong." It was one thing when you asked for opinions of Jo Riding, having seen a clip you thought less than good. Your thank you was quite another. Is your opinion worth more than ours, or did we disappoint your attempt at Jo Riding bashing? In either case, perhaps you should start a topic specifically for praise of Martine McCutcheon where some of us would never consider responding.

I have not seen Joanna Riding in My Fair Lady. However, I have seen her in Martin Guerre and think that she was absolutely amazing. I am absolutely sure that My fair lady will go from strength from strength now that they have got rid of a star name 'Martine McCutcheon' and replaced her with some-one who actually has 'star quality'............. Good luck Jo!
